Ex-Man Utd manager's Christian Eriksen concerns emerged before Denmark star collapsed

 Ruben Amorim previously explained how Manchester United had to carefully consider Christian Eriksen’s health during his time at the club. The midfielder spent three years at Old Trafford before joining Wolfsburg last summer.

The 34-year-old caused concern after collapsing on the pitch during the second half of Denmark’s friendly with Ukraine on Sunday. A statement from the Danish FA (DBU) read: "Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances. The match has been called off."

The incident comes almost five years after Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020, which led to him being fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). He returned to football in 2022 after signing a short-term deal with Brentford, where his displays earned him a move to United.

The experienced midfielder made 107 appearances during his time with the Red Devils, winning the FA Cup and League Cup. However, former United boss Amorim admitted to being conscious of Eriksen’s health after the Danish star missed a defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in February 2025.

"I think Leny (Yoro) and Chris, they were sick. So they will recover,” Amorim said at the time. “Of course, Chris has the heart situation and we have to be really careful with that. It’s nothing about the heart! I’m just saying the heart rate has to be controlled because he has a fever."

Eriksen left United at the end of his contract in 2025 and subsequently joined German club Wolfsburg. He made 34 appearances at club level this season but was unable to help his country qualify for this summer’s World Cup.

Following the distressing incident involving Eriksen on Sunday, Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen said: "Christian walked off the field on his own. As I see it, the pacemaker is working as it should.

“He was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him. He will now undergo further tests at the hospital to determine what caused the incident.

“We are in close contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”

Denmark were leading 2-1 against Ukraine before the match was called off. Patrick Dorgu and Joakim Maehle had put the Danes ahead, with Viktor Tsygankov scoring for Ukraine before half-time.

A statement from Manchester United said: "Everybody at Manchester United is encouraged by Denmark’s update on Christian Eriksen following today’s abandoned friendly against Ukraine. The club is sending strength and love to Christian and the Eriksen family as we await further news."
