Car SOS stars issue urgent message to classic car owners ahead of Labour car ban

Classic car owners have been told not to panic ahead of Labour's upcoming petrol and diesel car ban rule in 2030. Tim Shaw and Fuzz Townshend, hosts of classic car restoration series Car SOS, have stressed that historic vehicles will not be under threat from the knock-on effects of car ban rules.

From 2030, most manufacturers will be prevented from registering brand new petrol and diesel vehicles, with only some exemptions for hybrid cars and low-volume manufacturers. Second-hand cars and classics already on the road will not be banned, but there have been suggestions that it could be harder to run historics if the number of petrol stations declines.

Experts at PodPoint were among those who suggested that "the rising uptake of EVs will present a challenge to classic car drivers in the future".

However, speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Fuzz warned historic vehicle owners should not be too worried at this stage as he tipped synthetic fuels to be a likely solution.

He said: "You can still buy some hay for a horse and you can still buy some coal for a steam engine so you can still get petrol.

"And synthetic fuels as well. There's a lot to be said for our style of fuels. We will still be able to buy them, they will still be around. Yeah we might not buy them at petrol stations in the way we do now. We might have to buy them at farms, that will probably be a good place, a farm could have a tank of synthetic fuel."

Meanwhile, Tim added that he couldn't see legislation being passed that would affect classic car owners. According to data from Peter James Insurance, the number of historic vehicles registered with the DVLA has risen again to just shy of 2million.

They stressed that the historic vehicle sector contributes £7.3 billion per year to the UK economy, with motorists spending around £4,567 per year maintaining their classics.

Tim told Express.co.uk: "Put it this way, as long as there is the House of Lords, there is going to be classic cars on the road. Those old boys and girls have classic cars... They are making the rules to suit their own hobbies."
