David Muir fans say they're sorry as host issues tragic update
Viewers of ABC World News Tonight expressed sympathy toward anchor David Muir after he delivered news about the death of legendary architect Frank Gehry during his Friday evening broadcast.
Fans flooded social media with messages expressing condolences to Muir, 52, who has a staggering net worth and salary, following his announcement that Gehry had passed away at age 96 at his Santa Monica home. "I am so sorry. Incredible architect. RIP," one viewer commented on the ABC World News Tonight Instagram post.
Another commenter expressed gratitude to the anchor, writing that they appreciated him honoring Gehry during the broadcast. During the segment, Muir opened by stating that tributes were pouring in for one of the world's most well-known architects following Gehry's death. It comes after Muir fans were left 'heartbroken' after he shared a devastating phone call.
The anchor described how Gehry created some of the most jaw-dropping buildings ever designed, most notably the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in northern Spain. The titanium building opened in 1997 and saw 1.3 million visitors come through its doors in its first year.
"We want the building to be. Have a presence in the community. We want it to be strong. We want, we want our little mud pies in great buildings," Gehry said in old footage aired on the broadcast.
Muir explained that Gehry was an early user of computer technology to further his architecture career.
The anchor referenced a 1978 project where Gehry redesigned his home in Santa Monica, California.
Muir detailed Gehry's early years, noting he was born in 1929 in Toronto and worked part-time in his grandfather's hardware store as a young boy. After the family moved to Los Angeles, Gehry took pride decades later when his Walt Disney Concert Hall opened just miles from where he grew up.
The segment concluded with Muir sharing Gehry's own philosophy about his work.
"I don't want to impose myself for the ages on anybody's life with a building. There it is. It's yours now. Make it into what you need it to be," an old clip of the architect said.
Viewers thanked Muir for dedicating time to honor Gehry's life and legacy, with one fan writing that the architect had a great talent.
"Thank you for honoring him tonight what an incredible talent and gentleman," one commenter penned.
Another wrote, "Condolences, thoughts and prayers to his family and friends... The Globally renowned Architectural genius of his time, Frank Gehry has died at age 97.... His distinctive Deconstructivist and postmodern style and its Controlled Chaos Architecture, such as the iconic design of Guggunheim has transformed the city of Bilbio...."
"Architecture is more than a profession, it changes the way we experience the space we are in. Maestro Frank Gehry, thank you for sharing your vision. We will see you in your buildings," a third added.
Gehry passed away at his home following a brief respiratory illness, according to a spokesperson.
