Corruption remains main enemy of independence: Attorney General
Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin, during the Independence Day commemoration, stated that corruption is the primary enemy of independence as it robs people of their rights and destroys public trust.
“There is no room for traitors of the law within the Prosecutor’s Office. Uphold integrity, because once integrity collapses, the entire structure of trust will fall,” he said in his address, as delivered by Acting Deputy Attorney General Asep N. Mulyana here on Sunday.
According to Burhanuddin's wrriten statement, the independence proclaimed 80 years ago was not an end, but the beginning of a great responsibility to safeguard the nation's sovereignty through civilized law enforcement.
He also stated that the establishment of the Prosecutor’s Office on September 2, 1945, was part of the foundation of Indonesia becoming a country that is based on the Constitution.
For him, the two historic events, the proclamation of independence and the founding of the Prosecutor’s Office symbolize that independence without law is merely an illusion, and law without the spirit of independence loses its meaning.
The Attorney General emphasized that the Prosecutor’s Office has a noble duty to ensure that independence is truly felt by all citizens through justice.
In line with the theme of the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence, “United and Sovereign, Prosperous People, Advanced Indonesia,” the Attorney General underlined the vital role of the Prosecutor’s Office in supporting national development towards Golden Indonesia 2045.
He stated that the 80th anniversary of the Republic, which also coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Prosecutor’s Office this year, is a momentum for major transformation in the institution.
This transformation, he said, can be realized through three strategies, which are establishing a unified prosecution system to erase overlapping authorities, strengthening the role of attorney general, and utilizing modern technologies such as AI and digital systems to combat corruption and organized crime.
