Paul Scholes Names Two Strikers Man United Should Sign to Compete With Hojlund
As evidenced by the signing of Matheus Cunha, Manchester United are keen to move early in the summer transfer market – and Paul Scholes, formerly a central midfielder for the Red Devils, has implored Ruben Amorim to sign two strikers. He also insisted that he’d keep hold of Rasmus Hojlund.
Coming off a deeply concerning campaign, Amorim – widely regarded as one of the best young managers in world football – and his entourage are keen to act quickly to a) enjoy a full pre-season with their summer additions and b) fend off competition.
GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Only Everton (42), Leicester City (33), Ipswich Town (36) and Southampton (33) scored fewer goals than Man Utd’s44 in the 2024/25 Premier League season.
The aforementioned Cunha has arrived; Brentford talisman Bryan Mbeumo has reportedly green-lit a move to Old Trafford – but there is another position to reinforce and that is the solitary centre-forward berth, currently occupied by the aforementioned Hojlund.
Midfielder-turned-pundit also offers Hojlund optimism
Finishing with a negative goal difference for the second campaign running is, certainly, a cause for concern for Manchester United’s higher-ups, especially in a period of struggle for Hojlund. Joshua Zirkzee, who was signed from Bologna, could also lead the line, but there are suggestions that he’s better suited elsewhere.
On the Red Devils’ pursuit of a new striker this summer, Scholes spoke on the most recent episode of The Overlap to suggest that Victor Osimhen, who spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Turkish giants Galatasaray from Napoli, would be financially attainable. Per Manchester Evening News, he said:
“I think Osimhen [is free to leave Napoli this summer], it sounds like a doable one. When you talk about financial problems, he could be doable.”
Scholes, one of the best passers in football history, also insisted that he’d been retaining the services of 22-year-old Hojlund, who has often flattered to deceive in a Manchester United shirt, as his performances have been affected by the club’s lack of options.
“But I’d keep [Rasmus] Hojlund. I know he’s not been great, but he’s a 22-year-old kid playing on his own for Man United the last two years. He's had to play every week, he is the only one. Man United should have at least three top centre forwards."
Over the years, the 13-time Premier League champions have boasted no shortage of top-level line-leaders – Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Dwight Yorke, to name a few – and Scholes has insisted that having three strikers would suffice.
“I’ve have him and Osimhen and Gyokeres.”
There are worries over whether Gyokeres’ goalscoring prowess would transcend from Portugal’s top flight into the Premier League – but you cannot argue with his numbers. In 2024/25 alone, the Swedish hitman managed to plunder an eye-catching 54 goals.
Osimhen, too, would add plenty of firepower to Amorim’s limp attack force. Napoli’s 13th-highestgoal scorer of all time, the 26-year-old is in his prime years, and can score with both feet. Whether they’re able to secure his services remains unknown.
