Manchester United must fork out £40 million to solve error-prone first XI spot
Manchester United must pay £40 million to land Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez
Old Trafford no longer commands respect as it once did. In recent years, Manchester United’s goalkeeping position has become a constant source of doubt and error. Since David de Gea’s departure, the club has searched unsuccessfully for someone to restore solidity and confidence between the posts.
The signing of André Onana raised expectations, but his performance has been inconsistent, especially in key matches. Between technical errors and rash decisions, the Cameroonian has sown more uncertainty than security. In this situation, a deal is beginning to take shape that could turn the team’s defence around.
According to Fichajes, the English side have set their sights on Emiliano Martínez, current Aston Villa goalkeeper and a key figure in the Argentine national team. Martínez not only welcomes the possibility of signing for the Red Devils, but has already expressed internally his willingness to leave Birmingham.
Aston Villa, for their part, are not openly opposed to the transfer, but is demanding a fee of around £40 million to let him go this summer. For now, United have not made a formal offer, although the club’s management are seriously considering making a move if Onana’s performance does not improve during the preseason.
Should Manchester United pay £40 million for a goalkeeper who, while reliable, is not a young investment with long-term potential? The price is high and forces the club to think twice. There are cheaper options on the market, but none with the combination of character, leadership and Premier League experience that the 32-year-old brings.
The Argentine does not need to adapt, he knows what the league demands and has proven in major tournaments including a World Cup, that he does not shy away from challenges. With Rúben Amorim at the helm, a methodical coach who demands a lot from his defensive line, having someone like Martínez can offer immediate stability, something that has not happened with Onana so far.
However, priorities must also be analysed. Manchester United need reinforcements at the back, in midfield and probably in attack. Is it urgent to replace Onana or simply to provide competition? If the club choose to spend £40 million on a goalkeeper, that expenditure must translate into points and immediate confidence in a backline that is short of self-belief in abundance.
Martínez can offer that, but the technical management must be sure that this move does not limit other necessary operations. What is clear is that the goal needs less noise and more certainty, and that is where the Argentine could make a difference. Meanwhile, Ben Foster backs Martinez to end 29-year-old’s troubled stint at Manchester United.
