Harry Maguire is Man Utd's unlikely hero as Old Trafford 'has its greatest ever night'
Harry Maguire was Manchester United's unluckiest of heroes during an unforgettable evening at Old Trafford.
United looked dead in the water, they were down and out as Lyon strutted their stuff seemingly into the semi-finals. However, there was a lapse in concentration led to a United penalty that opened the door for Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes did what Fernandes does, and rolled the ball into the back of the net. All of a sudden, United, who had capitulated and looked resigned to defeat, were the team in command.
Their boy wonder, Kobbie Mainoo, dipped and weaved into the penalty area before curling the ball into the far corner. It was 6-6 on aggregate and the game was only ever going one way.
And up stepped Maguire, who had been thrown in by Ruben Amorim up top - desperate for any sort of goal.
"It's one of the most remarkable nights this stadium has ever seen in European competitions," TNT Sports' commentator Darren Fletcher yelled as Maguire wheeled off after heading home.
And Robbie Savage added: "He's got the equaliser! I told you, Harry Maguire, he's the man!" Rio Ferdinand then chimed in: "No other can do this. Take you as high as a high and as low as a snakes belly!"
Paul Robinson, who was on BBC Radio 5 Live, said: "A special European night, again at Old Trafford. The roof has come off the place. What an incredible game and incredible comeback!
"Ruben Amorim is dancing up and down the touchline."
He added: "I have seen nothing like it. Bedlam. The stewards are on the pitch, fans are on the pitch and staff are on the pitch. Andre Onana is doing laps of celebrations.
"Harry Maguire from seven yards out! Old Trafford has not seen scenes like this for many a year. A special night at Old Trafford. I don't think I have ever seen a game like that.
"Ruben Amorim coolly making his way off. They looked dead and buried. I have not seen that character from them all season. Superlatives, you run out of them! Wow, wow, wow for what we've just seen?"
